Yesterday; March 30th, 2011, I along with my dear friend Hector Mendez, Jr. went to the Wrestlemania 27 Press Conference at The Hard Rock Cafe in Manhattan. Besides being enriched with fellow press members and the superstars who would be gracing the grandest stage of them all come Sunday, the amount of fans eager to participate in this event was beyond an impressive turn out. Once inside, the atmosphere became flooded with chants from each fan section. At certain points you even heard competitive chants from one side the other side such as “UNDETAKER!…..TRIPLE H!” or the most favorite one of the afternoon, “LET’S GO CENA!…CENA SUCKS!”
However, despite the competitive chanting between each side of the room, the fans all united once Michael Cole came on the stage to start the press conference. In all honesty, I’ve never heard such hatred and detest for a single person. Being a member of the press I knew I had to keep my composure, but being a fan as well, I as well as Hector wanted to join in with the fans in jeering and shouting “JERRY! JERRY!” Oh well…next time I am sure I will get the chance to freely be what I always have been; a fan.
First person to be introduced to the podium was Stephanie McMahon; who may I say looked positively gorgeous. In talking about what Wrestlemania means to her, she made a very important point in stating that the very first Wrestlemania took place at Madison Square Garden. The ovation within the room from all the proud fans was indescribable. One thing I have to mention, is that at one point we heard a chant that had both me and Hector laughing so hard on the inside. We heard a few people start a “Hogan Sucks!” chant, and from the look on Stephanie’s face was clearly not in disagreement.
Next to the stage was The Rated R Superstar Edge. Here is a man who positively loves what he does for a living from the time he wakes up to the time he goes to bed; if he ever does get to go to bed. In his speech he stated:
“Wrestlemania in this time of year is my favorite time of year. It’s Christmas, it’s Halloween, it means anything! This is Wrestlemania! For me…this is all I wanted to do…this is it!“
This coming Sunday, Edge defends the World Title against newcomer Alberto Del Rio; who has stated on numerous occasions that he is destined to become the next World Heavyweight Champion. In interviewing him, I asked him if he has a strategy in mind when it comes to facing Edge and this is what he had to say:
“It’s just simple…I’m hungry. I’m here and this is the reason why I came here to this country. I left everything in Mexico; my family and my friends, everybody for this. For Wrestlemania, for the Royal Rumble, for the World Heavyweight Title, so I don’t need a strategy. I’m hungry and I’m ready for this. And just like I’ve been saying for weeks, it is my destiny to be the new World Heavyweight Champ in Atlanta…“
In watching him since his debut in late 2010, I can honestly say that Del Rio has a bright future in the WWE ahead of him. I along with others who I know are fans of his wish him lots of luck in his championship match with Edge.
Next to be introduced was The WWE Champion; The Miz. The crowd was very welcoming with chants of “AWESOME!” being echoed all across the room. The Miz as we know came from humble beginnings. Being on shows such as The Real World and TMZ and then going on to competing in Tough Enough; not too many people could say that they believed he would succeed in professional wrestling. Boy did he prove all his doubters wrong. Not only did he succeed in becoming a WWE Superstar, he became a tag team champion and now he has the right to say that he’s the only (male) Tough Enough competitor to hold a World Title; being that Melina Perez held the Woman’s Championship Title. As we all know, Miz is going to be defending his title against John Cena. Feeling very confident, Miz assures that he is not only going to Wrestlemania 27 as the WWE Champion, but he will be leaving Wrestlemania 27 still the WWE Champion. Enclosing this declaration, he went on to say what I’m sure every fan has been waiting to hear, “...Because I’m The Miz…and I’m….AAAAAWESOOOOOOME!!!!“
Next to be introduced was The King of Kings Triple H. Facing Undertaker this coming Sunday, needless to say…all eyes will be on The Cerebral Assassin. He is going to be facing a very feared entity that the wrestling world has to offer. A man who in his new entrance theme, Johnny Cash states a very valid truth, “There ain’t no grave…can hold my body down…“ For no matter who may face him or how bad he may get injured…Undertaker always finds a way to rise up and somehow becomes stronger and more resilient than he was before. He has established himself in this business so much so that he has earned the right to not just state who is going to be the one to “lay him to rest,” but when as well. And as he stated on RAW this past week…if there was anyone he would want to end the streak, it would be Triple H. But as for when, Wrestlemania 27 is not the time. In knowing how ruthless and merciless Triple H can be when it comes to a match of this same magnitude…I have no doubt that these two men are going to give it everything they got against each other. My only query is that being the stipulation is NO HOLDS BARRED…that means that a person who is not in the match can interfere without either competitor becoming disqualified. Being that Shawn Michaels asked Triple H on Monday what makes him think he can do what Shawn couldn’t…it now raises a question as to whether or not we can expect Shawn to pull a swift Sweet Chin Music and to whom. Only time will tell, and this Sunday that question will be answered.
Next to be announced, was Jersey Shore’s Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi. She along with Trish Stratus and John Morrison will be in a 6 person inter-gender tag team match with Lay-Cool and Dolph Ziggler with Vickie Guerrero at ringside. She had this to state:
“When I appeared on Raw, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. This nasty broad Vickie Guerrero decided to challenge me at Wrestlemania. So of course, I couldn’t back down…I had to say yes. So me and my girl Trish Stratus and my boy Morrison; The Brunette Mafia is coming to Wrestlemania and we’re not gonna lose. We’re winning…“
Granted most feel that Snooki will not be participating as much in the match as Stratus and Morrison will…but in seeing how she can apparently hold her own against Layla, I don’t doubt that she will fight tooth and nail. So do not underestimate “the little people.” For those who have nothing but doubt about Snooki…let me point out that Rey Mysterio is aprime example of someone who most doubted to succeed in this business due to size. BUT…he proved to be quite the athlete and quickly turned doubters to believers. So to Snooki…I wish you lots of luck in your match…and don’t be surprised if Vickie tries to interfere. She can be quite the slick one to try and cheat. Guess she’s trying to follow in her late husbands footsteps in that aspect. Let me tell you though…she can try all she likes…but she could never and will never measure up to Eddie’s level of cheating tactics. But that’s just my opinion.
Next to face the press and fans…none other than John Cena. I thought that the jeering going on for Michael Cole was bad…boy was I wrong. I never thought I would hear so many people chanting “AWESOME!” at one time. Looking back at Miz sitting in his chair, you can tell with the egotistical smile he had on his face that he was just eating up every second of it. Now knowing he will be facing The Miz for the WWE Championship, both of them have something else that they need to worry about. And that is the fact that both of them are not in The Rock’s good graces. John has said numerous things about The Rock such as him leaving the WWE fans around the world hanging while he went off to do movies. In speaking with John, I asked him if he was prepared for the possibility of The Rock having something up his sleeve in store for him at Wrestlemania. He had this to say on the subject:
“Initially…whatever I said about The Rock…everything had meaning and merit. I wanted The Rock to come back. That was my main objective when I say ‘Why do you leave?’ ‘Why do you go elsewhere?’ I love this business and I don’t need to say it because I’m here every week. Come back please…It took him him five years but he’s like ‘Alright Im back”…so if he feels he’s ready and capable of getting out of the movie chair and into the ring and actually doing something then so be it. This is what I do for a job and I’ll be just fine…“
John, I as well as your fans wish you loads of luck in your match against The Miz. I just feel bad that not only do you have the possibility of Alex Riley being in Miz’s corner, but you have The Rock possibly “cookin” a lesson plan for you as well. Watching him throughout his career at WWE, John has always been the type of competitor who can hold his own when need be. So there is no doubt that he will be able to handle anything that may come his way come Sunday.
Last but certainly not least…FINALLY! THE ROCK HAS COME BACK TO NEW YORK CITY! Seeing The Rock in the flesh…there is truly no feeling like it in the world. He is truly is the most electrifying man in (sports) entertainment. The hype in the entire room felt as if it increased 10 fold once he started talking. In trying to speak, fans all over the room were chanting everything from “ONE MORE MATCH!” to “Thank You Rock!” to “Fruity Pebbles!” and even a “YABBA DABBA DOO!” Having participated in many other prestigious events such as winning a National Championship for the University of Miami and The Oscars, there is still to him NOTHING like participating in Wrestlemania. He went to state:
“The best part about this Sunday…is that when the time is right…I will layeth the smacketh down on somebody’s candy ass…“
Certainly implying to everyone that John Cena and most likely The Miz as well will be getting a lesson in manners.
All in all…quite an amazing press conference. Being able to get to speak to John Cena and Alberto Del Rio one on one was something I know I will treasure. I wish everyone who is competing at Wrestlemania 27 loads of luck, and I look forward to watching it on my 52” screen with loads of popcorn and a huge bottle of soda!
Give’em Hell Ladies and Gentlemen!
Sincerely Always,
~Bianca C.~
